Ugly Racist Acts Are Happening Right Here In My Neighborhood

I am in shock.

I read and see stories of horrible racist act through the news on a daily basis. We all do. And they all disgust me.

Tonight is the first time something so ugly happened right up my street.

A young Caucasian couple dined at Anita’s Mexican restaurant in Ashburn, VA tonight and wrote on their check “Don’t Tip Black People”.

I’m speechless. Disgusted. What year are we in?

How is this world not getting better? I feel that, since the election, our country is regressing. Violent and malicious acts of racism seem to be widespread.

I can’t say that I have personally received any kind of behavior like this but I believe in treating everyone with respect. Everyone deserves to be treated with love.

There is something to be said about saying something nice or don’t say anything at all.

So, tonight, I encourage you to remember that the people near you that look different from you are human beings. Their differences are what make them special. Your differences are what make you special. Who wants to be exactly like someone else?

You don’t have to like everyone. There are plenty of people to not like. But it is unacceptable to attack and mistreat another individual.

Racism is disgusting.

I am in shock.

I can empathize. A very high profile racial incident happened last week where I live and we are all in shock and disgusted on a local level. Turning on the news or logging in to social media makes my heart hurt. I work as an educator and work daily to foster empathy, kindness and strength of character in my school building and also in my interracial family. I do not understand being deliberately mean to another person because of the way they look. I will continue to treat others with basic kindness and respect and keep teaching my children and students to do so as well.
